The lack of South Asian representation in eating disorder spaces may leave some to assume that this population does not struggle with eating disorders. Not only is this not true, but this misconception contributes to the stigma that South Asians internalize about eating disorders. This talk will shed light on eating disorders in South Asian communities by both summarizing the research and unpacking lived experiences that influence eating disorders and body image, such as issues related to colonization, globalization, immigration, and more. This presentation will also highlight the diverse nature of South Asian experiences as attendees can expect to learn about the unique circumstances that shape the eating disorder development, treatment, and recovery in these communities. Kimmie will end this talk with tips for clinical practice to better support South Asians with eating disorders.
